Airport Safety Specialist
Jim Patterson is an Airport Safety Specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Safety Technology Research and Development Sub-Team at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ, USA, where he manages research projects in Visual Guidance, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, Airport Design Safety, and Operation of New Large Aircraft. Jim has a Bachelor of Science degree in Airport Management - Flight Technology from Florida Tech, Melbourne, Florida. He holds a Commercial pilot certificate with Instrument and Multi Engine ratings, and is a Certified Flight Instructor. In his spare time, Jim enjoys camping, boating, spending time with his wife and two kids, and running into burning buildings as a volunteer firefighter. Originally from New Hampshire, Jim moved to Southern New Jersey to begin his career in aviation safety in 1993, working for several companies as an airport safety support contractor. He joined the FAA in December of 1999.
Jim was the project manager responsible for execution of the FAA’s recent research effort to develop obstruction lighting standards for wind turbine farms.
